 Location: 140-148 Collier Row Road, Romford, RM5 2BD
Pay Rate: £20 per hour
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Hours: Flexible shifts including weekends and bank holidays (24/7 operation)

GD Service Station Ltd operates the Esso Collier Row Service Station, a 24-hour, full-service forecourt offering premium Esso fuels, a Londis convenience store, Subway, Coco di Mama, and a state-of-the-art Jet Wash. We are committed to delivering exceptional customer service, convenience, and quality to every visitor. Our Esso Collier Row Service Station in Romford is a bustling site, serving thousands of customers every week. We're looking for an experienced and motivated Shop Manager to join our team and play a key role in driving sales growth, maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction, and ensuring the smooth operation of our shop and service station.

  

Role Overview

We're seeking a proactive, highly skilled and customer-focused Shop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our Esso Collier Row Service Station shop. As a Shop Manager, you will be responsible for leading a team of shop assistants, managing sales targets, maintaining high levels of customer service, controlling stock levels, and ensuring the shop and service station areas are clean, tidy, and compliant with health and safety regulations. Key Responsibilities


Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise Staff: Manage a team of shop assistants, ensuring adequate staffing during peak hours. Conduct training, performance reviews, and mentorship to foster skill development. 
  • Scheduling: Create and adjust rotas to cover shifts, holidays, and absences. 
  • Culture: Promote a positive workplace culture aligned with GD Service Station’s values (e.g., teamwork, reliability, customer focus). 

Customer Service 

  • Frontline Oversight: Ensure a welcoming, clean, and well-stocked shop environment. Resolve customer queries promptly and escalate complex issues. 
  • Feedback: Monitor customer satisfaction through reviews/feedback channels and implement improvements. 
  • Loyalty Programs: Promote and explain customer loyalty schemes to drive repeat business. 

Sales & Stock Management

  • Sales Targets: Achieve daily/weekly sales goals for fuel, retail items, and concessions. Analyse trends to optimise stock levels. 
  • Inventory Control: Monitor stock levels, place orders, and coordinate with suppliers. Reduce waste through accurate forecasting. 
  • Merchandising: Ensure shelves are restocked, displays are appealing, and promotions are highlighted. 

Compliance & Safety 

  • Health & Safety: Enforce HSE guidelines, conduct risk assessments, and maintain a accident-free environment. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to petroleum licensing, food safety, and retail legislation (e.g., ESOS, FCA standards). 
  • Audits: Support internal/external audits and compliance checks. 

Financial Management

  • Budgeting: Assist in creating and monitoring shop budgets (e.g., payroll, stock costs). 
  • Cash Handling: Oversee till procedures, shift handovers, and nightly cash deposits. 
  • Expense Control: Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising service. 

Administration & Reporting 

  • Documentation: Complete accurate shift reports, incident logs, and sales summaries. 
  • Communication: Liaise with regional managers to report performance metrics and operational issues. 

Company Initiatives 

  • Promotions: Drive awareness of special offers (e.g., fuel discounts, product bundles). 
  • Brand Consistency: Uphold Esso/GD Service Station branding in all customer interactions. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and presentation standards across the shop      and forecourt.
  • Conduct regular audits and ensure accurate cash handling and      banking procedures.
  • Collaborate with senior management to implement promotions and      meet sales targets.
  • Ensure all equipment (e.g., Jet Wash, tills) is operational and      report maintenance issues.

  

Requirements

  • Proven experience in retail or service station management      (minimum 2 years preferred).
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays.
  • Basic IT skills (EPOS systems, email, stock management      software).

  

Desirable

  • Experience with Londis, Subway, or similar convenience/food      retail brands.
  • First Aid or Health & Safety certification.
  • Knowledge of fuel station operations.

Role Overview

As Shop Supervisor at GD Service Station Ltd, you will lead and support the shop team to deliver exceptional customer service and maintain high operational standards at Esso Collier Row Service Station. You will oversee daily shop and forecourt activities, ensure compliance with all safety and company policies, and act as the primary point of contact in the absence of the Shop Manager.

  

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and motivate shop staff, providing direction,      training, and support to ensure excellent performance and customer      satisfaction.
  • Oversee daily operations of the shop and forecourt, ensuring      cleanliness, safety, and efficiency at all times.
  • Manage staff rotas and allocate tasks to maintain full coverage      during all shifts.
  • Handle customer inquiries, resolve complaints, and ensure a      positive shopping experience.
  • Monitor inventory levels, coordinate with suppliers, and ensure      timely replenishment of stock.
  • Maintain accurate records of sales, inventory, and incidents;      assist with cash handling, end-of-day banking, and reconciliation      procedures.
  • Enforce adherence to health, safety, and hygiene regulations,      and ensure compliance with age-restricted sales laws.
  • Prevent stock loss through effective security measures and loss      prevention strategies.
  • Support the Shop Manager in achieving sales targets and      implementing promotional activities.
  • Act as key-holder, responsible for opening and closing the      premises and responding to emergencies as required.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive team culture      aligned with GD Service Station Ltd’s values.

  

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in retail or customer service, preferably in      a supervisory or team leader role at a service station or convenience      store.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational and multitasking abilities, with      attention to detail.
  • Confident in cash handling, reconciliation, and using      point-of-sale (POS) systems.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve customer      and operational issues promptly.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and      bank holidays, as required by the business.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, food hygiene, and      age-restricted sales regulations (training can be provided).

  

Desirable Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Supervisory or management training.
  • First aid or health and safety certification is a plus.

Role Overview

As a Shopkeeper at GD Service Station Ltd, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Esso Collier Row Service Station’s retail shop. This includes delivering excellent customer service, managing stock, handling payments, and ensuring the shop and forecourt remain clean, safe, and welcoming. The role requires a proactive, reliable individual with strong communication skills and a commitment to maintaining high retail standards in a busy service station environment.

  

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve customers at the till, process card and cash payments,      and handle refunds or returns.
  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable advice on products and      services, including fuel, food, drinks, newspapers, and automotive goods.
  • Ensure shop displays and pricing are accurate and up to date.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout      the shop and forecourt, including regular safety checks.
  • Monitor and replenish stock levels, rotate products, and assist      with ordering new stock as required.
  • Receive deliveries, check goods for accuracy and damage, and      store items appropriately.
  • Prevent shoplifting and ensure the security of the premises and      stock.
  • Comply with all health and safety, fire safety, and      age-restricted sales regulations.
  • Assist with basic vehicle checks for customers if required      (e.g., oil, tyre pressure).
  • Maintain accurate financial and shop records as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and support the training      of new staff where appropriate.

  

Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in retail or customer service, ideally in a      petrol station or convenience store environment.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure      setting.
  • Good numeracy skills and experience with point-of-sale (POS)      systems.
  • Basic IT skills for stock management and record-keeping.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to stand for long periods and      handle stock.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and      bank holidays, as required by the service station’s operating hours.

  

Desirable Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • Training in health and safety, food hygiene, or age-restricted      sales (can be provided on the job).
  • A personal licence to sell alcohol is advantageous but not      essential.
